NinjaTrader 8

NinjaTrader 8 (NT8) is a desktop futures and forex trading platform popular for its advanced charting, custom indicator framework, ATM (Advanced Trade Management) strategies, and broker flexibility — it connects to dozens of futures and forex brokers.

What makes it different from a web platform

NT8 runs locally on Windows. That has real benefits: no internet round-trip on every chart action, no browser performance limits, no dependency on the broker's servers being responsive. For traders who spend hours staring at charts, the difference is felt.

It also opens up extensibility that browser platforms can't match. You can write custom indicators, automated strategies, and add-ons in C#. Many prop traders use NT8 specifically for the indicator library that's accumulated over the years.

ATM strategies

An ATM strategy in NT8 is a pre-configured bracket template — entry rules paired with stop-loss, take-profit, stop trailing, and break-even logic. You set one up once and apply it to every trade.

For copy trading, ATM strategies are valuable because the trade-management logic (move stop to break-even at +10 ticks, trail by 5 ticks after that, etc.) can run on each follower account independently. The copier doesn't need to micromanage every adjustment — the ATM does it locally on each account.

Broker flexibility

NT8 connects to a long list of brokers: NinjaTrader Brokerage (powered by Phillip Capital), Continuum (Rithmic), TT (Trading Technologies), Interactive Brokers, Tradovate, and many forex MetaTrader bridges. This is a big differentiator from Tradovate, which only does what Tradovate does.

For prop firm traders, this means you can run combines on firms outside the Tradovate ecosystem (some firms use Rithmic data feeds, for example) and still keep the same platform. A NinjaTrader-based copier can mirror trades across any broker NT8 connects to.

When to use NT8 over Tradovate

If your prop firm supports both, the answer usually comes down to your workflow. If you want one app for analysis AND execution, NT8 wins — custom indicators, advanced charting, ATM strategies, scripting. If you want zero setup and platform-agnostic browser access, Tradovate wins.

Many serious traders run both: Tradovate for the simple execution path on a prop firm combine, NT8 for deep chart analysis and ATM-managed trades on a separate brokerage account. PropCopy ships products for both — a cloud Tradovate copier and a native NT8 add-on.
