Tradovate is a cloud-native futures trading platform owned by NinjaTrader Group. It runs entirely in the browser and is the underlying execution platform for most modern futures prop firms — including Apex Trader Funding, TopStep, Tradeify, MyFundedFutures, TakeProfitTrader and TradeDay.
Tradovate has a few properties that suit the prop firm business model. First, it's browser-based — no software install, no Windows lock-in, no version compatibility headaches. Second, it has a stable, well-documented API that copiers and analytics tools can plug into. Third, the cost structure scales with usage in a way that fits combine-fee-funded firms.
For traders, the practical effect is that the same login flow and order interface work across every Tradovate-based firm you trade with. The platform doesn't change when you graduate from a combine to a funded account at the same firm, or when you cross from Apex to Tradeify.
Both are made by NinjaTrader Group, but they serve different audiences. NinjaTrader 8 is a desktop application — heavy charting, custom indicators in C#, ATM strategies, full broker flexibility (you can connect to dozens of brokers). Tradovate is cloud-native, simpler, and more focused on execution than analysis.
Many traders use both — Tradovate for execution at prop firms, NinjaTrader 8 for charts and analysis. A few prop firms support both interchangeably; some explicitly require one or the other.
Because the API is standardized across every prop firm using Tradovate, a single Tradovate-native copier can connect any combination of firms. PropCopy's Web Copier is built directly on the Tradovate API — your master account at TopStep can drive followers at Apex, Tradeify, and MyFundedFutures simultaneously with no special configuration per firm.
The alternative — copying via screen scraping or browser automation — is fragile and slow. The official API is the right integration layer, and it's what serious copiers use.
Tradovate is futures-only. If you trade forex, equities, or crypto, you'll need a different platform. It also doesn't support custom indicators in the way NinjaTrader 8 does — if your strategy depends on bespoke charting, you'll likely use Tradovate for execution and another tool (NinjaTrader, TradingView, Sierra Chart) for analysis.
